Vampires never seem to get old. That’s true of the immortal undead creatures themselves. (Well, mostly.) And it seems to be true of movies starring them as well.
Drac’s back again this week, taking a bite out of the box office (though, thankfully, nothing else) in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Sony’s surprisingly family-focused threequel slurped up an estimated $44.1 million in its debut—a bit more than the first film in the franchise and slightly less than the second.
Ant-Man and the Wasp watched its tally shrink by 62%—the second-biggest second-week drop ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe, down to $28.8 million. But that was still good for a No. 2 showing, perhaps taking a bit of the sting out of those diminishing returns.
Speaking of diminishing returns, is it possible we’ve finally hit the fatigue point with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? In the last year alone, audiences have seen him in Baywatch, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Rampage. Perhaps that overexposure helps explain why many moviegoers decided to take a pass on his latest effort, Skyscraper. This violent Towering Inferno-meets-Die Hard-esque thriller underperformed pretty much everyone’s expectations, bringing in $25.5 million.
Meanwhile, Incredibles 2 continues to perform, well, incredibly. It landed at No. 4 with $16.2 million in its fifth weekend in theaters, pushing Pixar’s latest to a whopping stateside cume of $535 million. It’s already the highest-grossing animated film ever, and this weekend it also eked past The Dark Night to grab No. 9 on the domestic all-time list. Incredible indeed. No word yet on when Incredibles 3 will be released, but methinks it won’t be another 14 years before we see that one.
Finally, those pesky velociraptors in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom round out the top five with $15.5 million.
