On "I Am Not My Hair" the artist recalls her attempts to fit in before refusing to be defined by her outer appearance ("I am not my hair/I am not my skin/I am not your expectations/... I am the soul that lives within"). "Intro: Loving" begins with Saint Francis of Assisi's serenity prayer. Materialism can't hold a candle to "the faith in your heart" ("There's Hope"). With eyes fixed on a better future, "India's Song" reflects on America's history of racial injustice. Extending grace to others is central to "The Heart of the Matter" and "Wings of Forgiveness." Tracks find the singer at peace with herself ("Private Party," "I Choose"), giving unconditionally ("Outro: Learning") and confidently picking up the pieces of a broken heart ("Good Morning"). "This Too Shall Pass" warns that the pursuit of temporary things can cost us what matters most.
"Better People" reveals India's spirituality to be a dubious hodgepodge. She embraces "my Gandhi" and later speaks of seeing Jesus face to face in glory. Elsewhere, the highest virtue is "to thine own self be true" ("Wings of Forgiveness"). Liner notes thank Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and Carlose the astrologer.
India's socially conscious Testimony can be a source of encouragement, though families should take time to discuss her oddly all-inclusive worldview.
