Book Review

The San Francisco Splash by David A. Kelly has been reviewed by Focus on the Family’s marriage and parenting magazine. It is the seventh book in the “Ballpark Mysteries” series.

Plot Summary

Kate Hopkins’ dad is a scout for the Dodgers. She and her cousin Mike Walsh accompany him to San Francisco for a Dodgers and Giants series. Before a game, they kayak in the bay, looking for homerun balls hit into the water. Suddenly, they see an older man fall out of a boat. Mike paddles over and rescues him. They learn the man is Ray Reynolds, a former player who helped the Giants win a World Series. He’s in town to throw out the first pitch at one of the games. After Ray is back on the boat, he realizes his prized World Series ring is missing. He wonders if he lost it in the water or if it came off before that. Kate and Mike vow to help him find it.

Ray tells them that earlier he was arm-wrestling his old Dodgers rival Lenny Littleton. They question Lenny and realize he didn’t take the ring. They decide to return to the wharf to question Captain Dan, the man driving the boat that Ray fell out of. Captain Dan isn’t there, but they find a note on his windshield that mentions the ring, 3 p.m. and a rock. When they question locals, they discover that The Rock is another name for the famous prison on the island of Alcatraz. Along with Kate’s dad, they visit the island to hunt down Captain Dan. They manage to lock him in one of the old prison cells until they can explain to security what they suspect.

Sure enough, Captain Dan has the ring in his possession. He was planning to sell it to someone. After Captain Dan is arrested, the kids, along with Kate’s dad, Ray and Lenny, enjoy the rest of the series. The book includes a section with facts about San Francisco, including information about the ballpark and Alcatraz.
