Book Review

This book has been reviewed by Focus on the Family Thriving Family, a marriage and parenting magazine. It is in the “Nikki & Deja” series.

Plot Summary

Third-grader Deja decides to run for president of Carver Elementary. She assigns campaign manager duties to her best friend, Nikki. Nikki’s parents haven’t been speaking to each other for several days, and she’s afraid they’re getting divorced. Completely focused on her campaign, Deja fails to acknowledge Nikki’s struggles. She also begins treating other classmates as potential supporters rather than friends. Despite her campaign posters, her speech at the school assembly and her “Vote 4 Deja” cookies, she loses to an older student. Nikki’s parents slowly start communicating again. Deja’s aunt Dee, normally a health nut, takes Deja and Nikki out for pizza to soften the blow of Deja’s defeat.

Authority Roles

Deja lives with her Aunt Dee since her mother died and her father can’t take care of her. Aunt Dee is an involved caregiver who encourages healthy physical and educational habits.

Nikki’s parents stop talking to each other for several days after they have a fight. They work things out by the end of the story.

Deja is an authority figure in her campaign at school. She never acknowledges her inconsiderate behavior toward Nikki or other kids. She doesn’t realize she was inconsiderate — treating friends as supporters — or learn anything from her campaign defeat.
